Puerto Planta or Punta Cana for a 30 yr old single guy?
Question:
I’ve traveled around asia before, but never around the Caribbean. My good friend is from DR and suggested for me to go there to chill out and party after along stressful period at work. Looking to stay 87 nights. While I want nightlife I also want to be able to relax without having to be around a lot of other tourists when I want. My buddy has personally stayed at the following place and said he really liked it: http://www.allegroresorts.com/jtv_s/puerto_plata/ I’m much more used to the backpackers budget type of places…but if it’s all inclusive and a nice place it’s worth the money. he can’t make up his mind which is better for me…so I’m asking here. Puerto Planta or Punta Cana? I’d also like to go on a tour or two to se interesting things. I just picked up the Lonely Planet book- but there aren’t many pictures and it doesn’t give me a good picture of what to expect. TIA for any tips. Regards, Dean

Jack Tar is a fine resort, but expect it to be at least 90% couples. If you intend to end up in one of areas with local nightlife and partying, you might be better not staying in an all-inclusive. If I were staying 87 nights somewhere, it wouldnt be at the DR. Its not what I found to be a singles scene. Plus once your there, you will find out why every resort is all inclusive (at least in Puerto Plata, I’ve never been to PC). Simply because there isnt much going on outside of the resort. I’m not bashing the DR, It is a pretty place, but personally I found it somewhat boring. If you want to sit on the beach and do nothing for 3 months its probably perfect, but I like to get out and explor when I travel. I just didnt find that option in the DR. If you want nightlife go to cancun, but dont stay there, too touristy, stay at Playa De Carmen about a hour away, its a lot more relaxed with plenty of options for getting out and seeing the sights which are many, plus getting around while your there is inexpensive, you can get to cancun by bus for about 3 bucks. Catch the ferry at PDC and go to cozumel for a few bucks also. Gettting around at Puerto Plata is expensive by taxi. From the resorts to Plata is about 10 bucks for the five minute ride. Just my 2 cents worth. Reap – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Jack Tar is a fine resort, but expect it to be at least 90% couples. Oops. Typo. It should have been 7 or 8 nights. Not 87! :-P – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->it wouldnt be at the >DR. Its not what I found to be a singles scene. Thanks. I ended up getting an all inclusive to Punta Cana. I tried to get to cancun but the best price I could find with the 4th of July entering my time period was $1800. Too much. I was considering Rio or Costa Rica when I called and was told about the package. $1360- 7 nights all inclusive. Melia Tropical in Punta Cana. <shrug> Even if I don’t get exactly what I want I’ll get a vacation from New York. And I’m planning a 3 mos vacation to Asia in a couple months. DR is just to keep my sanity until I leave for Asia. ;) Thanks Dean – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Jack Tar is a fine resort, but expect it to be at least 90% couples. Beaches in Punta Cana are much prettier and the sand is softer and cooler than Puerto Plata. But, there is much more to see locally in Puerto Plata; you have to travel a longer distance to get to any larger cities from PC. — Kathy The Lord will perfect that which concerns me.
