Dominican Republic Holiday Disaster

Question:

I went to the Dominican Republic in January of this year with my daughter and my two grandchildren. We stayed at the 5 star all inclusive Melia Caribe Tropical.  After being there for three days I became extremely ill with severe vomiting and diarhea.  After a couple of days my daughter called the resort doctor and he sent me to hospital by ambulance.  I was diagnosed with gastrointestinal infections which I got from the food and or drinks at the resort. I am a seasoned traveller and know not to eat anything washed in the water nor to drink anything that is not bottled. I was too ill to return home on our scheduled flight.  The resort management told my daughter that she and her two children could not stay beyond our scheduled departure date and would have to find other accomodation. After fighting for several days and calling home to deal with the tour operator directly, they finally agreed that she could stay. We returned home upon my release from hospital.  I am still ill three months later.  I missed two months of work. I complained to the tour operator who has informed me that the resort does not take responsiblity for my illness as no one else was sick that week – January 8 – 15, 2002.  I fail to see how this has any bearing or if in fact it is true. I could not have become infected anywhere else as we did not leave the resort.  Why would we, it was all inclusive with our choice of 12 different restaurants. Does anyone know of a friend or relative who became ill at this resort around this time.

Did you perchance eat fish 8-12 hours before onset? Ciguatera might be a possibility — one single fish could have been bad. Check the symptoms at http://www.rehablink.com/ciguatera/poison.htm (just happened to be the first link I looked at on the search list.) — Jere Lull Xan-a-Deux (‘73 Tanzer 28 #4 sailing from Tolchester, MD) Xan’s Pages: http://members.dca.net/jerelull/X-Main.html Our BVI FAQs (290+ annotated pics) http://members.dca.net/jerelull/BVI.html

This happened to a travel client of mine in Cancun. She was PREGNANT ICU nurse and her husband was a chef and they got salmonella and they BOTH could not work for a LONG time due to the nature of their jobs. They tried to sue me, the wholesaler, the hotel…I felt HORRIBLE for her but it can happen anywhere. My ex hubby had Ciguatera…it lasted a few days with diarrhea, cramping, chills, sweating..he had to go to the hospital and have IV’s and then rest for days…He ate King fish.. you have to really be careful not eat any reef fish.  When in the caribbean it is tempting to try new fish but not worth the pain and sufferng it can cause.  The Melia hotels are very highly rated.  you can try posting this message in debbiesdominicantravel.com.  Maybe someone there has been sick the same time as you.  I doubt you will be able to sue anyone though. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >This happened to a travel client of mine in Cancun. Certainly sounds like ciguatera poisoning, which can cause problems for months or years.  I find it amazing how many people have never heard of ciguatera and think I am completely nuts because I won’t eat reef fish unless they are smaller than my plate.

I was also in the Dominican Republic in January, while I didn’t get sick during my stay, but six days after my vacation I developed a really bad throat infection, and had to get a shot of Penicillin from the Emergency Room – Now, three months later and I still feel  slugish,  and I lost twenty pounds and I have dark circles under my eyes, Steve Bacalao
