Saint Kitts Question…. Exploring….

Question:

I’m in the starting phases of planning an April trip to the Caribbean.  I’m looking for an island that is not too over-developed (in other words, quieter than Nassau, BH), but with a beachside hotel with a casino….. I’m also looking for a Smaller island that is explorable by foot or bike.  I’d like to be able to hike or ride around the island at will….. I’ve heard of all sorts of nice vistas and views on these islands, mountains to climb, etc…. but how much of this land is "Private Property"?? I was thinking about Saint Kitts, but I’ll be damned if I can find a hotel on the net that mentions a casino.  I was also wondering what the drinking age is on Saint Kitts, and perhaps the name of a nice resort for mid-April, usually during Holy Week through Easter Monday (Wed-Mon).  Most of these on-line directories are pretty much all the same- I don’t go to discos, thank-you.  If I want to get drunk to horrible American Dance music, I can stay at home and save money.  That’s what disappointed me about Nassau last year…. over developed, all private property.  Cranes building another Condo Complex shilloutted  all my sunset photos.  I hope to find some REAL Caribbean this year, with enough development (casinos) to keep my parents happy. Thanks for your help!! -Mike http://www3.edgenet.net/ristorm5 http://www.nemas.net

I believe that Jack Tar Village on St. Kitts has a casino; check out their web site at: http://www.jacktar.com/jacktar/sections/kitt1.html Good luck, — Concordia University Montreal, Quebec, CANADA

Jack Tar St Kitts, which was taken over by Allegro, isn’t right on the ocean.  It is tho, within reasonable walking distance. (5 mins to the Atlantic side)  And there’s a bar there that’s still part of the all inclusive package.  There is also a Caribbean beach that you can see from the golf course, but we’ve never gotten to that side. We’ve stayed twice,…both times for golf holidays and have enjoyed ourselves very much.  Food was fine, (not too elaborate), clean well kept rooms, and decent polite service. If you’re looking for a huge casino, you’re going to be disappointed. Vegas, this is not.  I’ve been to Vegas, and the Bahamas and you can’t really compare StKitt’s casino to either place. It is however enough fun if you like slots and they have blackjack etc.  How good the returns are, I don’t really know.  It’s a good way to spend a couple of hours after dinner as there’s really no "night life" to speak of.  (unless they’ve changed that since May 97) >I’m  also looking for a Smaller island that is explorable by foot or bike.  I’d > like to be able to hike or ride around the island at will….. There’s rainforest trips that are all day excursions. As is there an all day catamaran trip to Nevis. (it’s for all ages, there’s snorkling and a beachparty with good bbq’ed lunch and drinks included. Then you sail back late afternoon to Kitts.  This is a trip we NEVER would miss while in Kitts.  It’s a hoot. :)  (or you can just enjoy the ride, and sunshine (bring LOADS of sunscreen). If you take the catamaran ride, don’t load down with all sorts of junk, you won’t need it. At most, bring an extra towel, and a water proof camera, sunsceen and as little else as you can.  (you even leave your shoes in a bin, theres no shoes on the boat!)  Oh yes, you’ll also GET wet at lunchtime…they dock on the beach, and you have to hop out of the bottom of the boat…so if getting wet isn’t for you…then perhaps a bus tour is more the speed to go. There are bus dudes that park just outside the grounds.  They’ll take you downtown.  We’ve always used Lionel – of Lionel Bus Tours, he’s very nice.  He’ll take you downtown, and pick you back up afterwards.  The other bus dudes respect him too and won’t continue to hussle you if you tell them you’re his passengers. He took us around the whole island, brought us shopping on another day and helped me find a pair of black rock earrings that I just had to buy! :) I felt quite safe downtown,…enjoyed being able to buy a Carib beer and have a cold one on the sidewalk.  The green lemon/limey softdrink and the pineapple softdrinks that they have there, are good too. > I was also wondering what the drinking > age is on Saint Kitts,

This I don’t know…but I"m sure that www.stkitts.com will be able to give you the correct answer. > Cranes building another > Condo Complex shilloutted  all my sunset photos.  I hope to find some REAL > Caribbean this year, with enough development (casinos) to keep my parents > happy.

JackTar gets sunrise sun,…it faces to the east.  Now, that’s not to say it’s a bad location, however the sunsets, are over the mountain that you can see up the hillside on this page:

Ps…Also, the water there, (when I was there) was the best tasting water I’ve tasted.  I encountered no problems. Hope this helps! Allie

hey mike… been to t kitts 3 times Its wonderful let me give you the low down…. jack tar does have a casino, small but fun….as far as drinking age it really does not matter, as long as you look 17 plus…. I recommend TING WITH A STING.. RENT A JEEP OR TAXI ( WHICH IS EXPENSIVE) AND CHECKOUT FRIARS BEACH A MOST WONDERFUL BEACH, WITH A SMALL BAR/REST THEN ..TRAVEL FURTHER PAST FRIARS TO OTHER SECLUDED BEACHES ALONG THE WAY.. LAST STOP BEING TURTLE COVE WITH A NICE RESTAURANT AND BEACH…. SNORKELING IS GOOD AT MOST BEACHES….THE ATLANTIC SIDE DOES HAVE LARGE WAVES WHICH IS VERY CALMING BUT GOOD FOR SNORKELING, THE Caribbean SIDE IS IS SMOOTH, WITH MANY WATER SPORTS AVAILABLE..OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST WOULD BE RAIN FOREST,AND VOLCANO TOURS… YOU WILL NEED A GUIDE FOR THESE ADVENTURES…BUT BRIMSTONE HILL AND OUTLEY plantation YOU CAN DO YOURSELF…. RENT A CAR AND YOU CAN DRIVE AROUND THE ISLAND IN ABOUT 2 HOURS NOT INCLUDING WONDERFUL STOPS ALONG THE WAY … ITS VERY NICE, SAFE, NATIVES ARE COOL …YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD TIME….. HAPPY HOLIDAY!!!

If you’re go to St. Kitts you can’t miss dining at The Golden Lemon. Almost worth a visit in itself! Nevis is nice too. I liked Pinney’s Beach.

If you are planning on St. Kitts I highly recommend it.  I’ve gone twice.  I would recommend staying in the Frigate Bay area.  There is the Frigate Bay resort which was adequate.  This year we stayed in the Horizons Villas which were quite nice.  They are not on a beach nor is any hotel in St. Kitts.  Hyatt has been planning to open a resort on South Friar’s Bay beach but I heard that they have scrapped plans because St. Kitts won’t allow them a private beach.  It would be tragic if they did, because this is the nicest beach on the island, in my opinion.  If you are staying on St. Kitts, I’d rent a car.  You can drive easily around the island.  Sure you could stay at Jack Tarr’s with the casino, but with a car you have an option of checking out the rest of the beautiful island with its many nice beaches and restaurants. I really liked S. Friar’s Bay beach for lounging and there is some good snorkeling (octopi, rays, eels, as well as fish), chairs for rent and plenty of icey cold Carib beer to cool you down.     For lunch go down the road slightly to Turtle Beach.  Excellent food.  My favorites include the Chicken Roti, Fish Burger, Lobster Salad, and Calypso Chicken Salad.      Other good snorkeling beaches include white house bay, with its sunken ship, just off shore, and Frigate Bay.        If you go to the other side of the island, by the Golden Lemon, there are other beaches, but I really think that the peninsula by Frigate Bay is the best area for water/beach activities. Now for my culinary recommendations: Ottley’s Plantation for a fancy dinner Rawlins Plantation for a nice west Indian Brunch. The Golden Lemon. Turtle Beach for a casual beachside lunch. The Patio for a fancy dinner. Ballaloo’s for Mahi Mahi and lobster. Mangos Stonewalls Sprat Net for fresh fish and ribs.  They are a casual open air barbeque owned by fishermen who cook up what they catch.  When I was there that was lobster and mahi mahi, both very tastey.  Also excellent was their ribs, though I doubt that they caught the pigs in their nets.  Complete your meal with some icey cold Caribs and your set! Two years ago, Fisherman’s wharf was great.  This year it was awful.  Go figure.  Wonder what will happen later.  My brother did the volcano hike  and said that it was excellent but grueling.  We have had several bad experiences with Greg’s Tours, constantly canceling at the last minute, so despite what the guide books say, I would look elsewhere for your guide up the volcano. St. Kitts is a quiet, less-developed island, without the crowds, with nice people, but developed enough to have a variety of nice places to stay and good cuisine.  The casino is fun, though not huge.  They are accomodating though.  Believe me…if they opened a beach side resort, this island would cease to be the paradise that it is. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I’m in the starting phases of planning an April trip to the Caribbean.  I’m > looking for an island that is not too over-developed (in other words, > quieter than Nassau, BH), but with a beachside hotel with a casino…..
