Charter in the Virgin Islands

Question:

We (My wife and I) are planning a trip to the US Vigin Islands in Early August.  We would like to spend part of our stay on a small sail boat (Charter with Captian).  Can any one let me know what is the most economical way of making arrangements with a charter service.  Should I do it ahead of time or wiat until we get to the island. We only plan on spending 3 nights in the boat, so I thought I might get the beast deal if I made arrangements last minute at a marina.  Any advice would be great.

You might possibly get some info by inquiring at http://www.bookitvi.com, depending on where you will be staying in the USVI.

A yacht charter is best arranged in advance unless all you are talking about doing is a daysail for a few hours.  You can charter a "bareboat" with a hired captain, or a "crewed yacht" with a captain only, or better yet, a "crewed yacht" with a captain and chef.  Particularly with these smaller boats the fully crewed yacht will likely work out cheaper in the long run as they are priced inclusively (crew, boat, food, fuel, open bar etc…) plus, you don’t have to cook and do dishes! Even though you might get a better deal by waiting until the last minute, I wouldn’t want to risk my vacation by not making arrangements in advance. Having said that, however, you are going during the low season, so your chances of finding something after you get there are probably pretty good. Are you a bettin’ man?  ;-) Here are a couple of resources that might be of help to you… http://www.caribguide.com/articles/sailingaway.html http://www.caribguide.com/netlinks/yachtcharters.html Kent CaribGuide ~ 5104 Saddleridge Cove ~ Austin, Texas 78759 Office: 512.342.0170 ~ Mobile: 512.626.3914 ~ Fax: 512.342.0890
